The Next Big Thing - My turn....

Okay - so, as mentioned previously, Barbie Wilde invited me into "The Next Big Thing" - here are my answers to the Questions asked - hope you enjoy.

(as I'm typing this I'm listening to Tara by Bryan Ferry - that's the kind of mood I'm in today!)

1. What is the working title of your next book?
As usual, I have a couple of projects on the go - but right at this moment I am compiling / editing a new horror anthology called "The Demonologia Biblica".

2. Where did the idea come from for the book?
Recently I've been obsessed with Demons - as well as this antho, I'm actually doing a second one for Static Movement called "Demonology".  King James 1st of England wrote a book called "Daemonologie" and was very personally involved in witch trials and the like - actually as I'm typing this perhaps I should write a Steampunk type of book where James 1st is a demon hunter....um, I quite like that....hold that thought.

3. What genre does your book fall under?
There are twenty six authors in the book.....I would say horror with some elements of dark fantasy, dark comedy and a little bit of humour....

4. What actors would you choose to play the part of your characters in a movie rendition?
My particular story is called "The Sixteenth Chapel" and (stop sniggering at the back) I have to thank Justin Bieber for the title.  If you don't know he was recently interviewed on David Letterman and he apparently mixed up Sistene Chapel with Sixteenth - but what was his stupidity was actually a flash of inspiration for me and I have written a series of stories which have appeared / are appearing in a number of anthologies about some mysterious goings on in Paris.

With that in mind - the "lead role" (as such) I wrote for a great young french actor called Vincent Rottiers - he's really getting a name for himself and MASSIVE things are predicted.  I've very recently written a short film script also set in Paris with him in mind which has just got me nominated for "best screenplay" at the upcoming Monaco Film Fest.

5. What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?
For the antho as a whole it would be something like "An A - Z of Demons" - I know, not very exciting and I'll work on that before publication.

For my personal story it would be something along the lines of "The Devil hides in the most strangest of places" but don't quote me on that - it'll be a thousand times better than that soon - as I say, it's a large story arc....

6. Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?
No - the antho will be published by Western Legends Press - back end of December or early 2013.  Check them out!  http://westernlegendspublishing.wordpress.com/

7. How long did it take you to write the first draft of the manuscript?
The story usually only takes a week or so but the editing / fine tuning - a couple of months!

8. What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?
For me, some of my work has been compared to early Clive Barker - so I'll stick with something like the "Books Of Blood".

9. Who or what inspired you to write this book?
I'd love to say the Bieber but I won't....right now, I'd say PARIS inspires me on a daily basis.

10. What else about the book might pique the reader's interest?
The fact that I compiled / edited it?  No?  Okay - let's say it's a great anthology full of brilliant, nominated and award winning writers - and a cover by the amazing James Powell.  Western Legends are a new publisher and they deserve all the successes that are coming their way!!!!

More when I have it!!!

Here's the front cover:

PHOBOPHOBIA Review

Nice little review over at the British Fantasy Society :>)

http://www.britishfantasysociety.co.uk/reviews/phobophobia-compiled-and-edited-by-dean-m-drinkel-book-review/

PHOBOPHOBIA Compiled and Edited by Dean M. Drinkel, Dark Continents Publishing, s/b, £9.99, www.darkcontinents.com

Reviewed by Matthew Johns
Phobophobia offers up 314 pages of tales about phobias – an A-Z of frightening fears, ranging from fear of written words (Bibliophobia), to fear of hospitals (Nosocomephobia), to fear of frogs (Ranidaphobia).
Some are exceptionally graphic – S is for Sarmassophobia, by D.M. Youngquist for example, where a man who is afraid of dating follows his female friend (who is a submissive) into a sex club and finds himself thrust into a world of bondage, which cures his phobia. Others though have their tongues firmly in cheek, such as the excellent J is for Jesusphobia by William Meikle. What happens when a good man with a deathly fear of Jesus dies and is sent to Heaven?
All of these short stories are incredibly gripping – some tug at the heart strings, some tug at the funny bone, while others just make you shiver. The bonus story from Steven Savile and Steve Lockley is also excellent, and worth waiting for.
If you like a good horror story, then check this anthology out – they probably won’t save you the cost of a visit to a psychiatrist to cure your phobias, but they’ll make you realise that whatever you’re afraid of, there are much worse things out there!

Cool - don't forget to check it out!!!

Through A Forest Dark

Great start to the week - brilliant review of my short story collection appeared on amazon today.
Check it out.

"An intense journey from Paris to the gates of hell inspired by The Divine Comedy, Through a Forest Dark by Dean Drinkel is a superior collection of horror tales, three stories of guilt and punishment and retribution - appropriate themes given the source poem (though also appropriately, redemption is not subject to requirement).

This is not a Paranormal Romance by any means - it would probably give a Twilight fan (cute vampiric) kittens with its heady mix of fantasy and realism. The sex and violence are graphic, but they are fully a part of the dark twisted landscape that Dean Drinkel describes and, though harrowing, are right for the book. Horror is meant to be disturbing, not reassuring - this isn't Barbara Cartland (disturbing though she indeed is).

This is a very modern, fast paced collection - the stories are definitely page turners - but there's also the feel of a portmanteau horror movie about the book, I can imagine a young Donald Sutherland as the hero of the second story, and maybe a young Joan Collins in the third, and that's a testament both to the visual power of the stories and the vividness of some of the characters.

An excellent, compelling stuff, and highly recommended book from Dean Drinkel and Dark Continents Publishing."

Good Review 2: Phobophobia

and then this appeared also on amazon!!!

"Phobopobia is an enjoyable anthology of new horror stories from Dark Continents, and judiciously selected and edited by horror writer Dean Drinkel. It showcases a diverse range of terrors from twenty six fantastic authors, ranging from the talented but little known to firm fan favourites. The highlights for me are Bibliophobia by Paul Kane (as strong as ever), and Zeusophobia by the editor (and who isn't scared of either books or gods?), but all the stories are well chosen and well told and if I'm not mentioning anyone else its simply that there are almost too many excellent contributions here. A horror highlight of 2012 so far."

Good Review 1: The Empire Of Death

An excellent review appeared on Amazon today for my poetry collection "The Empire of Death".

"A fine collection of dark poems from horror writer Dean Drinkel, they evoke the charnel house and the crematorium and the apocalypse. The influences of Rimbaud and Baudelaire at their darkest, can be discerned, as well as the obessions of Jacobean writers such as John Webster (with their fascination with the connection between sex and the grave, the body as worm seed). He reaches too well into the dark places of the inside, and as such these are not for the faint hearted, nor those seeking reassurance about this world or the next."  - J Miles

Nice one!

Phobophobia - another great review

Wow - another brilliant little review of Phobophoibia but Paul Woodward - nice!!!!

And a great closing comment:

"...there are stories too where you really want there to be a happy ending and you think its going that way but no…
Zeusophobia (fear of God) contains one of the most alarming descriptions of semen I have ever read described as, metallic monsters seeking consummation with an electronic deity....Dementophobia (fear of insanity) is reminiscent of the Beckett Trilogy in an existential rural landscape with the narrator suffering flashbacks.
In short there is plenty here for everybody to enjoy."

Thanks Paul dx

Ginger Nuts Of Horror - Phobophobia

What a brilliant brilliant review of Phobophobia by Jim at GNOH - we're all very very happy!!!!

And this is what he said about my own story:

Z is for Zeusophobia : Dean M. Drinkel

I've always said you can judge an anthology by the contribution of the editor.  After all, his story kind of sets the benchmark.  And truthfully, Dean's story sets the standard perfectly.  A mysterious figure is travelling the globe, granting dying wishes to those desperate for his help.   This was a gripping enough story, however when the reveal is made as to who or what the mysterious figure is, the story is elevated to even greater heights.   Dean's story was another personal highlight of the collection for me.

Nice one :>)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
PRLog (Press Release) - Jan 02, 2012 -
Dark Continents Publishing announces the January 2, 2012 release of their new E-book series titled “Tales of Darkness and Dismay”. This highly anticipated collection of novellas and short story compilations by twelve up-and-coming authors is available for immediate download via Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing.

http://darkcontinents.com/ proudly announces the following author and title line-up for the “Tales of Darkness and Dismay” series:

“Blood and Fire”, a paranormal/vampire thriller by Carrie Clevenger and Nerine Dorman

“A Gentle Hell”, a collection of achingly surreal supernatural stories by Autumn Christian

“Through a Dark Forest”, a gathering of short stories inspired by the layers of hell from within Dante's Inferno by Dean M. Drinkel

“Beatrice Beecham’s Houseful of Horrors” a young adult favorite; this is the third book in the Beatrice Beecham series by Dave Jeffery

“Along the Splintered Path,” a collection of disturbing stories that explore the dark side of life in the remote countryside by A.J. Brown

“Were-wolves, Apocalypses, and Genetic Mutation, Oh My!” is the satirical yet satisfyingly horrific group of stories that detail the end of the world, told by the master of dark humor Suzanne Robb.

“Critique” a true horror novella detailing the downfall of a food critic star as he is driven mad by an appetite he can no longer control, written by Daniel I. Russell

“April Fool and other Antipodean horror stories” What is the definition of antipodean, you ask? Any two places or regions that are on diametrically opposite sides of the earth – the perfect definition to match the two seasoned horror authors of Tracie McBride (from Australia) and John Irvine (from New Zealand).

James Powell - Artist

If you've seen the excellent cover to my antho "Phobophobia" then you will be pleased to hear that he has created something special for my upcoming Titanic Antho (more of later in January).

Here's some info on James:

Artist/Illustrator James R. Powell is a native of Mississippi, where he quietly resides, surrounded by the dark woods that provide inspiration for much of his work. He has numerous cats, and a vast accumilation of books and other very weird objects. He has many wonderful and intriguing friends, both real and imaginary.
In 1999 he was employed by Peavey Electronics, painting guitars for musicians such as Eddie Van Halen, Sheryl Crow, John Entwistle, and Alex Lifeson.
He's worked in film and advertising, and has created art for a variety of authors, including Neil Gaiman, Brian Hodge, and Scott Nicholson, and has a forthcoming project in the works with Michael Moorcock.

Estronomicon / Screaming Dreams

Back in mid-2009, I was very lucky to have a short story published in the "Dark Desires" issue of Estronomicon (via Screaming Dreams).  Steve Upham does an amazing job.

Theaker's Quarterly

I was lucky to have my short story "El Aullido del Diablo" back in 2010 in the excellent TQ (issue 33) - check it out.

It's a great periodical and hope to have some more work published by them in the future.

Through A Forest Dark

...is published today - hurray!!!

A nice little write up also:

"A gathering of short stories inspired by the layers of hell from within Dante's Inferno. Bradley - a man consumed by by the beautiful and mysterious Emmanuelle. Several murders in Paris. A husband who believes his wife's ghost still haunts the home they shared. Will this collection of tragic lovers be able to maintain their humanity in a world awash in chaos and blood? Or is their fate already decided within the pages of an ancient book reputed to be written on human skin?"

Available for download now and not even £2!!!!  Cheap at half the price.
Enjoy
